  • red food coloring gel or liquid
  • pink sprinkles for decorating (optional)

Method
 

  1. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, and salt.

  2. Cream Butter: Add the softened butter to the dry ingredients and cream together until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  3. Add Vanilla: Stir in the vanilla extract.

  4. Incorporate Milk: Gradually add the milk, one tablespoon at a time, until the dough comes together into a smooth ball.

  5. Color Dough: Divide the dough in half. Add a few drops of red food coloring to one half and mix well until evenly pink or red.

  6. Roll Dough: On a lightly floured surface, roll out each portion of dough to about 1/8-inch thickness.
  7. Cut Shapes: Use heart-shaped cookie cutters to cut out cookies from both the plain and colored dough.
  8. Arrange on Baking Sheet: Place the cookies on an ungreased baking sheet.
  9. Bake: Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
  10. Cool: Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  11. Decorate: While the cookies are still slightly warm, sprinkle on pink sprinkles, if desired.
