Ingredients
  

  • 12 slider buns
  • 1 pound Italian sausage removed from casings
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper
  • 14.5 ounce canned diced tomatoes drained
  • 8 ounce canned tomato sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • to taste Salt and pepper
  • 6 ounces provolone cheese sliced
  • banana peppers Optional
  • giardiniera Optional
For the Assembly
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Brown Italian sausage, onion, and green bell pepper in a large skillet over medium heat. Drain any excess grease.
  3. Stir in diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, oregano, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Slice slider buns in half horizontally. Place bottoms in a baking dish.
  5. Spoon sausage mixture onto the bottom buns.
  6. Top with provolone cheese slices. If using banana peppers or giardiniera, add them now.
  7. Place the top buns over the cheese.
  8. Brush the tops of the buns with melted butter mixed with garlic powder and Italian seasoning.
  9. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until cheese is melted and bubbly and buns are golden brown.
  10. Let cool slightly before carefully slicing and serving.

Notes

Opt for high-quality Italian sausage. Experiment with different types – sweet, mild, or hot – to suit your taste. When browning the sausage, break it up into small pieces for even cooking. To prevent soggy buns, lightly toast the slider buns before adding the sausage mixture. Use a sharp serrated knife for slicing the sliders after baking. Add a sprinkle of grated Parmesan cheese over the provolone before baking.
