Ingredients
  

For the Dough:
  • 1 cup warm water (105-115°F)
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour plus more for dusting
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil plus more for greasing bowl
For the Cheese Topping:
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

Method
 

  1. Activate the Yeast: In a large bowl, dissolve sugar and yeast in warm water. Let it stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy.

  2. Make the Dough: Add flour, salt, and olive oil to the yeast mixture. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.

  3. Knead the Dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
  4. Let it Rise: Grease a clean bowl with olive oil. Place the dough in the bowl, turning to coat. Cover with plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

  5. Prepare the Topping: While the dough is rising, mix mozzarella cheese, Parmesan cheese, Italian seasoning, and garlic powder in a small bowl.

  6. Shape the Breadsticks: Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Punch down the dough and divide it into equal portions. Roll each portion into a long, thin rope.

  8. Bake: Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
