In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm milk. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy. This step ensures the yeast is alive and active.
1 packet active dry yeast, 1 tablespoon sugar, 1 cup warm milk
Add the melted butter, salt, and flour to the yeast mixture. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, 1 teaspoon salt, 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. The dough should be soft and slightly tacky.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning to coat. Cover with plastic wrap or a clean towel. Let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size. Be patient – this step is crucial!
Punch down the dough to release the air. Roll it out to about 1/2 inch thickness. Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out the rolls. You can re-roll the scraps to get more hearts.
Place the Heart Shaped Dinner Rolls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover and let rise for another 30-45 minutes.
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the tops of the rolls with melted butter.
2 tablespoons melted butter
Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown. Keep a close eye to prevent burning.
Remove from oven and brush with more melted butter (optional). Sprinkle with sea salt or herbs if desired. Serve warm and enjoy your Heart Shaped Dinner Rolls.
