- Preheat oven to 350°F. Coat a 9x13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
- In a shallow bowl, combine the thyme, dried parsley, garlic salt, dried oregano, cayenne, and dry mustard.
- Arrange half of the sliced onions evenly in the prepared baking dish to cover the base.
- Sprinkle with half of the combined spices, then arrange half of the butter pieces and half of the shredded cheeses on top.
- Repeat the process with the remaining onions, spices, butter, and cheeses to create a second layer.
- Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 40 minutes until the onions are soft and the sides are bubbly.
- Remove the foil and continue baking for 15 to 30 minutes until the top is golden brown and crispy.
Notes
Use a mandoline slicer for uniform 1/2-inch slices. For a crunchy top, sprinkle breadcrumbs over the cheese before the final bake. You can also substitute cheeses with a mix of Mozzarella, Sharp Cheddar, and Parmesan.
